In our projects as digital assetmangement integrators we often face the challenge to provide additional functions and special cockpit views for assets of a DAM system.
The DAM manufacturers offer different approaches to achieve custom views and/or features. There is either the possibility to add menus or displays within the normal DAM GUI (Graphical User Interface) or link an external portal via a web service interface like SOAP or REST. We usually favor the second option since in most cases our customers want an individual cockpit view that cannot be implemented in the normal application view and the supplied development gui tools of the DAM. This way one is not limited to even the DAM GUI technology and can implement simple search agent portals for sales people to access quickly data on the fly over mobile devices.
In most cases our customers want a highly configurable interface based on modern web technologies (HTML5, CSS3) to ensure maximum compatibility between browsers, tablets (iPad, Android, Windows) and other mobile devices.
Another feature highlight is a simple but powerful search engine technology we use to offer even very complex search queries. Search results can be further limited or expanded by setting filters and adding or removing search parameters. It is also important that the portal can be either connected directly to the DAM system or operated externally and detached from the main system. For instance to provide public information and assets over a Cloud or CDN network.
In recent years we have created a portal framework for celum IMAGINE (now Team Edition) based on the GRAILs technology.
The Grails framework is Java/Spring based and is suited perfectly for the development for modular portal applications. It is not just a monolithic system that can only display content from a DAM system but more a kit where you can determine which components you will need for your webapp. Like to display a directory tree in a certain way, quick text search fields, date filters, download options where users need to acknowledge certain legal documents, ordering functions with approval workflows or a web to print module that incorporates a one2edit server in the portal application.
The portal framework including the modules is sold as a base license. In addition there are of course always individual adjustments and the actual project implementation.
Thus projects starts out like this: The client request is analyzed and we determine together which components are needed. After we are able to answer questions like if the portal needs to communicate only with celum or in addtion to a PIM or a web to print system we can determine the base price for the portal plus the an estimate for the project implementation. As a customer you profit from our client base that use our portal framework technology and its continuous development.
The FHCon portal framework allows you to create simple portal applications that are powered by even complex workflows. In order to use this portal with your celum IMAGINE (Team Edition) server you need a free open.api license.

The main difficulty among other things was that fact that the branches sometimes only have a very slow internet connection – but the service providers have significantly faster lines. Instead of first loading the material down and then send it to their agencies a custom PIN download portal has been developed based on the FHCon portal framework.
Furthermore no training should apply. The user should be able to simply create PIN links without any confusing options.
The stipulation was that the end user should be able to fill a shopping cart and send a PIN link to their service provider without manually creating first an object collection, drag assets into it, create a PIN and finally get a PIN link.

This project was done with the agency relationline from Hückeswagen/Germany. They looked for an integration partner that was able to bring both systems – celum IMAGINE and one2edit together. The agency took over the overall project management and provided the specifications for the portal interface.
With the portal now in operation relationline continues to supply templates to the system so the users can access more and more variations. The agency uses the creative.connect module from celum to upload new InDesign documents that are automatically transferred to on2edit. In one2edit the rules, such as what can be changed are applied for the templates. Once this step is done and the template is released in one2edit it becomes available in the portal.
In the portal the users see the collection of templates and can now produce their own documents. There is also the possibility to upload private images here. All the functions that users can execute are totally “encapsulated” so that they are completely unaware if the portal uses a celum function (upload and import of an image) or a on2edit function (start a template process in the one2edit editor) or a custom workflows that triggers functions in both systems.
Through the build-in validation rules one2edit prevents for example the use of images that are not suitable for the print because they are too small or the resolution is too low. The end user is therefore able to generate printable PDF/X3 documents without any media production experience that can be send to a printing company.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria is thus with the cooperation of their agency relationline able to provide a consisten brand identity of all communities. Futhermore the employees have access to a pool of ready made templates for baptismal certificates, posters, business cards etc. that they can quickly personalize with a few adaption. They can concentrate on the actual content and do not have to worry about formatting and the correct operation of a layout program – if at all present.
